Not automatically. A refrigerator filter only removes lead or PFAS if it carries a specific NSF/ANSI 53 certification for that exact contaminant - basic filters, and even some name-brand ones, often don't.

Lead and PFAS (PFOA/PFOS, the "forever chemicals") are both health-related contaminants, so a filter has to pass NSF/ANSI 53 testing specifically for each one to make an honest claim about removing it. A filter that only carries NSF/ANSI 42 certification (taste and odor) has not been tested for either.

Marketing language like "NSF certified" without a standard number attached is easy to misread as a blanket health claim. In reality, certification is contaminant by contaminant: a filter can be certified for chlorine taste and cyst reduction while having no PFAS or lead claim at all.
