How do I find my refrigerator's water filter?

Where is my refrigerator's model number?
It's usually on a sticker inside the fridge compartment (on a side wall or the ceiling), inside the fresh-food door frame, or behind the kickplate at the bottom. It's different from the shorter model number printed on the outside of the door.
Do all refrigerator filters remove the same things?
No. Filters are only certified for the contaminants they were actually tested against under NSF/ANSI 42, 53, or 401. A filter with no lead certification isn't proven to remove lead, even if it looks similar to one that does.
